Study Says No Future in iTunes-Like Paid Video Services

A new study projects that online sales of movie and TV show downloads will triple to $279 million in 2007 from $98 million last year.

However, the study forecasts that growth in sales may slow next year, and that the paid download video market may prove a “dead end” as more free programming is made available on ad-supported outlets, such as ABC.com, Joost, Movielink, and Amazon.

In addition, confusion over download-to-own video file formats and difficulties watching downloaded videos on TV screens are contributing to the limited takeup of users paying for shows online.
